Travel Essentials

What You Need to Know

🛂
Visas & Entry

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Algeria. Exceptions include citizens of Arab League countries and some African nations who may enter visa-free or on arrival.

Apply at your nearest Algerian Embassy or Consulate at least 4–6 weeks before travel. You will need an invitation letter, accommodation proof, bank statements and a return ticket.

French and some EU nationals have a simplified process. Check your country's specific requirements before applying.

⚠ Visa rules change. Always verify with the official Algerian consulate in your country before booking.
✈️
Getting to Oran

By Air: Ahmed Ben Bella Airport (IATA: ORN) is 14 km southeast of the city centre. Direct flights operate from Paris CDG, Paris Orly, Marseille, Lyon, Brussels, Montreal, London and multiple Middle Eastern hubs.

Airlines serving Oran include Air Algérie, Transavia, Air France, Vueling and Tassili Airlines. From the airport, taxis to the city centre cost approximately 1,500–2,500 DZD.

By Ferry: Seasonal ferry services connect Oran to Alicante and Almería (Spain) and Marseille (France), operated by Algérie Ferries and Baleària.

🚕
Getting Around Oran

Taxis: The main way to get around. Always negotiate the price before getting in — there are no meters. Short trips within the city cost 150–400 DZD. White taxis are private; yellow taxis are shared (collectif).

Bus (ETUSA): The city has an extensive bus network covering all major neighbourhoods. Cheap at 30–50 DZD per trip, but crowded and routes can be confusing.

Tramway: Oran's modern tram line runs through the city centre and is a quick, comfortable option for central areas. Ticket: 30 DZD.

Car Hire: Available at the airport. Driving in Oran is chaotic but gives maximum freedom for beach and day trip exploration.

💰
Currency & Money

The currency is the Algerian Dinar (DZD). As of 2025, approximate rates are: €1 ≈ 145 DZD · $1 ≈ 133 DZD · £1 ≈ 170 DZD.

Cash is essential. Card payments are rare outside upscale hotels. ATMs (GABs) are available in the city centre and at the airport. Withdraw enough for each day.

Daily budget guide:
Budget traveller: 2,000–4,000 DZD/day
Mid-range: 6,000–12,000 DZD/day
Upscale: 15,000+ DZD/day

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory — 5–10% in restaurants is generous.

📱
SIM Cards & Internet

Buy a local SIM card at the airport or any phone shop. The main operators are Djezzy, Mobilis and Ooredoo. A starter SIM with data costs approximately 500–1,000 DZD.

4G coverage is good throughout central Oran and along the coast. Most hotels and cafes offer free WiFi. Speeds are generally adequate for navigation and messaging.

📶 Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before exploring — data can be patchy in the medina and mountain areas.
🏥
Health & Safety

Oran is generally safe for visitors. Standard urban precautions apply — watch your belongings in markets, avoid displaying expensive items.

Health: No mandatory vaccinations are required for Algeria, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine vaccines are recommended. Tap water is safe in Oran but bottled water is widely available and preferred by most visitors.

Emergency Numbers:
Police: 17 · Ambulance: 14 · Fire: 14

The CHU Oran (University Hospital) is the main public hospital. Private clinics offer faster service for non-emergencies.

When to Visit

Oran Through the Seasons

Best Time
Spring
March — May
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ideal conditions — warm (20–26°C), green hills, wildflowers on Murdjadjo. Perfect for sightseeing, hiking and exploring without the summer heat. Fewer tourists. April is our top pick.

Summer
June — August
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hot and sunny (32–38°C). Perfect for beach season — the coast is magnificent. City is lively in evenings. Ramadan falls in summer some years — a special cultural experience but some services limited.

Best Time
Autumn
September — November
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sea still warm enough to swim (September), temperatures pleasant (22–28°C), crowds gone. Excellent for day trips and hiking. The best months for combining city, coast and countryside.

Winter
December — February
⭐⭐⭐

Mild Mediterranean winters (10–16°C), occasional rain. No beach, but great for exploring the city without heat. Hotels are cheapest and the city feels authentically local with few visitors.
